technical:  Recall is an audio installation that projects into a cow pasture at the Wanås Foundation in Sweden.  The Wanås estate houses a contemporary art park and a large organic dairy.  Recall works with the adjoining dairy part of the estate.  Two Speakers are housed inside two black megaphones and mounted on top of two fence posts.  Everyday at 3:30pm when the cows are being gathered for milking, a three minute audio calls out into the pasture from near the milking barn.

content: The audio is a high-pitched hearding call called kulning that dates back to medieval times in this area of Sweden.  Always preformed by women shepherdesses, this primal melancholic siren-song could be heard for miles.  Recall reanimates the air with the vocal work of Swedish folk artist Susanne Rosenberg.   Projecting from a cone one usually calls through, Recall emphasizes a feeling of absence with the lack of a real performer.  The megaphones call out to the cows and each other.  The femine pre-recorded song recalls an earlier time of the use of land and echo Charles Wachtmeister’s effective combination of older sustainable farming techniques with the higher tech equipment.
